As the incidents of mental health problems increase, so too are those seeking our assistance and support in being able to be there for their partners, children or relatives suffering from these conditions.
In the past, patients with mental health were hospitalised. The responsibility and stress of taking care of them remained with the medical profession.
Today we witness the enormous stress and challenges many of our clients face, whose loved ones have developed mental health problems such as Schizophrenia or Alzheimer's. Our clients have to take care of their family members with little information or support provided from the profession - overwhelmed as it is with community-based management.
As in the other lessons in this Skills Enhancement series, the focus will be on practical learning. I’ll share video footage of working with clients who are in this position. You’ll see how we can support them to keep going and avoid collapsing or becoming ill themselves.
